Traxectoria

Debutou profesionalmente no teatro en 1929 na obra The Five O'Clock Girl e no cinema en 1932. Durante a década de 1940 interpretou especialmente heroes británicos e filmes de guerra.

A partir de 1959 compartiu pantalla en varios filmes coa súa filla Hayley.

Gañou o Oscar ao mellor actor secundario por Ryan's Daughter, de David Lean, co que traballara en varias ocasións.

Finou en 2005, aos 97 anos de idade.
